Siemens Automotive is touting a ``soft'' hybrid powertrain add-on that combines an integrated starter/generator with an automatic manual transmission. The company says the package delivers a 15 percent to 20 percent boost in fuel economy.

The best part? Components can be readily incorporated into existing production cars to help automakers make fuel-economy goals without completely retooling product lineups, Siemens officials say.
