2001 MAR 8 - (NewsRx.com) -- by Maryclaire Lindgren, staff medical writer - Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist therapy is not an alternative to surgery in patients with endometriosis of the rectovaginal septum.
It is not a suitable alternative because it provides neither pain relief nor lesion reduction on a long-term basis, according to L. Fedele and associates of the University of Verona, Italy.
They evaluated the effectiveness of such treatment on 15 women with endometriosis of the rectovaginal septum. All patients had moderate to severe symptoms.
"Our results suggest that gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs should not be considered a real therapeutic alternative to surgical treatment for patients with symptomatic endometriosis of the rectovaginal septum, except possibly in a limited and unpredictable number of cases," the researchers reported.
The six-month study investigated the effects of leuprolide acetate depot on pain and lesion reduction in these patients. The women received one ampule intramuscularly (3.75 mg) every28 days, Fedele et al. said.
