by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer -- Adding booster shots to pre-exposure regimens for rabies vaccination could, in theory, be a more cost-effective approach to disease containment.
C. Strady and colleagues working in France compared long-term seroconversion rates of two pre-exposure vaccination methods: the one recommended by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (inoculation on days 0, 7, and 28), and an alternative method that advocates an additional booster on day 365. The alternative, furthermore, supports testing for seroconversion at days 379 and three years later, with additional boosters based on those test results.
This study, using data from two published studies on the long-term evolution of immunity, set out to compare which strategy was more effective and more cost-efficient ("Pre-exposure rabies vaccination: Strategies and cost-minimization study," Vaccine, 2001;19(11-12):1416-1424).
