by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer -- Medical researchers at Harvard University report finding no association between hepatitis B virus (HBV) immunization and increased risk for multiple sclerosis (MS).
Research conducted by A. Ascherio et al. counters previous claims of a link between HBV vaccinations and the onset of MS. "Reports of multiple sclerosis developing after hepatitis B vaccination have led to the concern that this vaccine might be a cause of MS in previously healthy subjects," Ascherio et al. said.
The researchers collected data on female study participants from the Nurse's Health Study and the Nurse's Health Study II. These studies have closely followed lifestyle habits and medical histories in more than 200,000 nurses for several years. "For each woman with multiple sclerosis, we selected as controls five healthy women and one woman with breast cancer," Ascherio et al. said.
