Reports that General Motors plans to spin off its flagship Corvette brand to a premium car group within the corporation are based on ``sheer rumor and speculation,'' GM and Chevrolet officials say.
``Corvette has been a highly successful Chevrolet brand for almost 50 years, and General Motors has no plans whatsoever to separate Corvette from the Chevrolet franchise,'' said Kurt Ritter, Chevrolet general manager. ``It remains a vital part of the Chevrolet lineup.''
Reports state GM wants to establish Corvette as a separate performance product line, independent from Chevrolet's lineup of family and commuter vehicles.
The stand-alone Corvette marque would become part of a premium-vehicle group in North America and Europe that would include Cadillac, Saab and Alfa Romeo-GM's answer to Ford's Premier Automotive Group of Lincoln, Volvo, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Land Rover, reports say.
