by Michael Greer, staff medical writer -- Maintenance treatment for retinitis isn't needed after successful highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), according to researchers in France.
C. Katlama and colleagues at the Hopital Pitie-Salpetriere assessed the risks of discontinuing maintenance therapy for cytomegalovirus (CMV)-related retinitis in HAART patients.
After 48 weeks without any preventive treatment, they found that the patients studied had only a 2% chance of relapsing. The chances of a reccurrence of any type of CMV illness was only 4% over that time period, according to their report in the journal AIDS.
The study participants had been undergoing HAART for a median period of 18 months, Katlama et al. said, and showed at least 75x10(6) CD4 cells per liter of blood and a viral load of less than 30,000 copies per milliliter.
