by Maryclaire Lindgren, staff medical writer -- A new vaccine is effective in reducing the acute middle ear infections that are so common in infants.
"The heptavalent pneumococcal polysaccharide-CRM197 conjugate vaccine is safe and efficacious in the prevention of acute otitis media caused by serotypes included in the vaccine," reported T. Kilpi and associates at the National Public Health Institute in Finland.
Kilpi et al. chose 1,662 infants at random to receive either the vaccine or a hepatitis B vaccine (to compare side effects) at two, four, six, and 12 months of age. They recorded episodes of ear infections verified by clinical and bacteriologic diagnosis.
The vaccine worked well, they said, illustrated by the reduction of infection episodes in those children receiving it. Overall, there were 2,596 episodes of acute otitis media ("Efficacy of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine against acute otitis media," New England Journal of Medicine, 2001;344(6):403-409).
