According to a new industry survey, 122 new medicines currently are in development to treat - and hopefully beat - heart disease and stroke, two of the top three causes of death in the United States.
The 122 medicines represent a 20% increase in drug development efforts for cardiovascular disease since the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) conducted the last survey in 1999. The 122 medicines are all either in human clinical trials or awaiting approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Some could be on pharmacy shelves this year.
"New medicines have helped cut deaths from heart disease and stroke in half in the past 30 years," said PhRMA president Alan F. Holmer. "But these diseases are still the first and third leading killers of Americans, and pharmaceutical companies are determined to give doctors and patients even more powerful weapons against them."
Although heart disease and stroke were once considered inevitable consequences of aging, doctors and patients now have a variety of medicines to prevent and treat these diseases. These include: medicines for high blood pressure, a leading risk factor for both heart disease and stroke; medicines that lower cholesterol and prevent heart attacks and may also be able to prevent strokes ...
