XFL claims to know the middle-class score.

There's already been enough hype surrounding the XFL's Saturday kickoff to fill the league's blimp. But Chairman Vince McMahon is going a step further: guaranteeing the league will succeed.

"The reason I'm certain is that we understand middle-class America," said McMahon, the chairman of the World Wrestling Federation, the co-owner of the league with NBC.

"Many people in professional sports today don't listen to fans. They listen to a bunch of attorneys and Madison Avenue." McMahon and NBC are betting $100 million that the XFL will be the first successful spring out-door football league.

That means no rules protecting players from the smash-mouth …
