Inexpensive Over-The-Shoulder 3-Chip For Advanced Amateurs

What would you say about a new DV camcorder that is designed to be used over the shoulders? Well, at first thought you might think this is retro-design, or going backward to the cumbersome way things used to be. But, there are many benefits to the over-the-shoulder design.

All professional videographers, video news reporters, and the like use Betacam camcorders, which are large, shoulder-mounted units. They have stability and easy-to-use features the pros need. The new DV camcorder we're reviewing is the Panasonic AG-DVC10P ($2,595 MSRP) from Panasonic Broadcast and Television Company. Let's see what makes it tick and show you the features you should be interested in.

Ergonomics & Features

The most obvious characteristic when handling the Panasonic AG-DVC10P camcorder is its size. Dimension-wise, it's 8 7/8-inches high by 16- 13/16-inches wide by 7 3/16-inches deep, and weighs 4.4 pounds, including battery. It's not the heaviest prosumer DV camcorder out there (that award probably goes to Canon's XL1 at 6 pounds, fully loaded), but it's definitely designed for over-the-shoulder use.

Curiously, it has an angular design reminiscent of the Canon XL1. But, despite its relatively large size, the AG-DVC10P's controls are well-laid-out, and its features should satisfy most serious videographers.

The top image quality of the AG-DVC10P is directly related to its image sensors--three quarter-inch, 270,000-pixel CCDs. That's about as good as it gets for a prosumer camcorder. A 12X optical zoom lens (30X/120X digital) provides excellent wide-angle or telephoto coverage.
