Remember this joke? God breaks into the evening news and announces He's destroying the world tomorrow at noon. The next morning's headline in the Washington Pose. "God Announces Intention to End the World; Women and Minorities to Suffer Most."

Don't laugh; editors and reporters for the Post and other national papers sometimes seem almost this goofy. Take a Washington Post headline not all that long ago: "Fatalities Higher for Latino Pedestrians." The story began with a harrowing incident that supposedly typifies a trend. When El Salvadoran immigrant Gladis Lazo and her five-year-old daughter tried to dash across a road to buy refried beans, they were struck by a car. Lazo was critically injured, her daughter killed.
