CANBERRA, March 1 Asia Pulse - The value of Australian fish exports will hit $A2.5 billion ($US1.31 billion) by 2005, helped by better prices, a leading forecast conference was told today.
Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) senior economist Peter Gooday said the nation's catch would break the $A2.5 billion ($US1.31 billion) barrier in 2001-2002 of which $A2.2 billion ($US1.15 billion) would go to export markets.
Total production would climb to $A3 billion ($US1.57 billion) by 2005.
In the past 10 years the value of Australian fisheries have climbed 56 per cent while aquaculture production has grown 150 per cent.
Mr Gooday said the strong growth of the rock lobster industry, which grew to almost $A600 million ($US314.64 million) last financial year, was expected to slow because of a drop-off in the total catch over the next few years.
