MELBOURNE, March 1 Asia Pulse - The Australian Workers Union today joined Victoria's construction workers in a mass 24-hour strike that began at midnight last night.
Victoria's industrial and commercial building sector is expected to lose up to $A19 million ($US9.96 million) as workers down tools in a bid for a better long-service leave deal.
An estimated 23,000 workers were expected to take part in the action, triggered by a meeting yesterday of 600 building union shop stewards.
The union members voted unanimously in Melbourne to stop work for 24 hours as part of on-going action to push employers into making long service leave available to members after only seven years in the industry.
The unions are calling for the present system of 13 weeks long service after 15 years work to be replaced by the same amount of leave to be available after 10 years.
The leave would be accessible on a pro-rata basis after seven years under the proposed changes.
