BRISBANE, March 1 Asia Pulse - After the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) yesterday rendered BHP (ASX:BHP) stikers' actions illegal, BHP is set to take legal action against striking Queensland miners.
AIRC commissioner Ken Bacon late yesterday granted an application by BHP for the suspension and cancellation of expired enterprise bargaining agreements and bargaining periods.
With his decision, the protection afforded to the seven-day strike begun by 1,500 miners yesterday came to an end.
The industrial action involved five mines operated by BHP Coal in Queensland at Peak Downs, Saraji, Norwich Park, Crinum and Gregory in central Queensland.
However, Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) state president Andrew Vickers said the strike would continue despite the commission decision.
