KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 1 Asia Pulse - According to figures released by the statistics department, Malaysia registered a strong real gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 8.5 per cent for 2000, compared with 5.4 per cent in 1999.
It said that in the last quarter of 2000, real GDP grew 6.5 per cent. 1999 fourth quarter figure was at 10.6 per cent.
In the first quarter of last year, GDP growth was at 11.8 per cent, second quarter 8.4 per cent and third quarter at 7.8 per cent.
The 8.5 per cent figure is higher than the 7.5 per cent forecast by the Treasury.
On a sectoral basis, the manufacturing sector expanded further in the fourth quarter with a 16.4 per cent real GDP growth against the same quarter of 1999.
As a result, the sector registered an unprecendented growth of 21.0 per cent in 2000, the Department said.
It said that services sector grew 3.6 per cent following growth registered in all its sub-sectors.
