RACIAL CLASHES IN CENTRAL KALIMANTAN SPREAD TO PALANGKARAYA.

JAKARTA, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- The racial clashes between the local Dayak community and settlers from Madura island which have so far claimed more than 200 lives in Sampit, Kotawaringin Timur, Central Kalimantan, have now spread to Palangkaraya.

Palangkaraya, the administrative centre of Central Kalimantan, is some 150KM from Sampit which has been the scene of violent clashes for over a week.

The latest clashes in Palangkaraya erupted after a certain degree of calm returned to Sampit following the evacuation of some 20,000 Madurese to East Java by Indonesian Navy ships.

It is feared here that the racial clashes will spread to other parts of Kalimantan …
