Mass. rates stingy on new list.

It's official: We're tight with a dollar.

Fresh on the heels of similar lists from both the Catalogue for Philanthropy and the National Center for Charitable Statistics, Boston-based CommonWealth magazine has compiled a state-by-state ranking that places Massachusetts near the bottom when it comes to philanthropic largesse.

The Sharing the Common Wealth Index ranks Massachusetts 45th in terms of average individual contributions to charity. Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Alaska are stingier, according to CommonWealth.
