Mattress Factory renovates with dreams of becoming more self-sufficient

A 24-foot-wide hole has been smashed into the side of the Mattress Factory. Although the North Side museum is known for its unusual art installations, the cavity isn't part of any exhibition.

Rather, it is part of the Mattress Factory's $1.5 million renovation) which will be paid for, in part, by an ongoing $10 million capital campaign.

To augment its budget and make itself more attractive to the foundations and corporations that fund its endeavors, Mattress Factory management hopes to grow its earned income from 18 percent of its $1 million annual budget to 25 percent.
