2001 FEB 17 - (NewsRx.com) -- by Michael Greer, staff medical writer -- Although HIV related lipodystrophy has symptoms similar to those of type 2 diabetes, the pathological mechanisms of the disorders are markedly different, according to endocrinologists in the United States.
"HIV lipodystrophy (HIV LD) is characterized by the loss of body fat from the limbs and face, an increase in truncal fat, insulin resistance, and hyperlipidemia, factors placing affected patients at increased risk for vascular disease," D.C. Mynarcik and colleagues at the State University of New York explained in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes.
