2001 FEB 9 - (NewsRx.com) -- Researchers are able to predict which children are at risk for type 1 diabetes, and they are studying prevention through a variety of different means including vaccination and immunosuppression, according to George Eisenbarth, MD, PhD, a leading childhood diabetes expert.
"To predict childhood diabetes, we look for certain autoantibodies to target molecules, such as insulin, GAD (glutamate decarboxylase), and ICAl2 (an intracellular enzyme also called IA+2), in the insulin-producing islets of the pancreas.
