Supreme Court to hear Ky. nursing labor case.

Local attorneys will argue a case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court next month that could impact every nursing home, hospital or other organization that provides professional health-care services. In fact, the ramifications could reach virtually any industry.

The case involves Kentucky River Community Care Inc, a company that operates a nursing home in eastern Kentucky for mentally ill patients. The facility, called Caney Creek, employs six registered nurses as part of its 110-person staff.

Those nurses joined a union in 1997. But Kentucky River refused to negotiate with the union; it said the nurses were ineligible to join because they were supervisors, …
