America's most highly educated major metropolitan area is Denver, where 38.7 percent of all adults hold bachelor's degrees.
The Denver-Boulder-Greeley region boasts the largest percentage of college graduates among 36 selected metros, according to figures from the Census Bureau.
Second was Minneapolis-St. Paul, where 38.4 percent of adults hold bachelor's degrees. Then came San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, with 37.3 percent, and Washington, D.C.-Baltimore, 37.2 percent.
The Census Bureau estimated the levels of educational attainment in 36 metros with populations above 1 million, based on the results of a survey it conducted last March. Results were confined to adults 25 or older.
Denver's share of college graduates was 13 percentage points above the national average of 25.6 percent. Twenty-five metros in the study group surpassed the national rate.
