One reason to explain the big difference in today's unemployment rate with that several years ago is the rise in the 'unaccounted' sectors.

'Unaccounted' or officially known as the informal sectors include such unregistered activities from hawking, tailoring and childcare services, to illegal activities like gambling, smuggling and prostitution.

The sector has a big impact on the Brunei economy. For instance, Dyg Hajjah, a woman trader in her 40's, selling agricultural produce, said: "Usually I earn about $150 to $300 a day, from 7:00am to 11:00pm daily, which is about $4000 or more a month."
