BEEP.
BEEP.
BEEP.
BEEP.
The sharp tone of the heartbeat monitor pierces my mind, already rattled with fear and insecurity. She lies on the operating table, more like a dentist's chair, sleepy from the small shot of anaesthetic she was given a few minutes ago. She's already woken up from it, she's been there and back, from consciousness to unconsciousness and back again to us, here in this world. The anaesthesia was only for sixty seconds, just long enough for them to inject a series of painkillers directly into her left eye.
"She'll only be asleep for one minute--it's nothing to worry about," the anaesthetist had said to me, as I looked, imploring, into the surgeon's eyes.
"But you said it would all be done with locals, without any general anaesthetic." I gulped.
