by Michelle Marble, staff medical writer -- According to a study from South Korea, burn patients will benefit from a three-dose vaccine schedule to protect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
"The aim of the present study was to compare two immunization schedules for a Pseudomonas aeruginosa outer membrane proteins (OMPs) vaccine in burn patients," D.K. Kim and colleagues, Hallym University, wrote in the journal Vaccine. "In a double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled clinical trial, 95 adult patients with burn injuries in 10% or greater of total body surface area were randomly allocated to either placebo or immunization groups."
Depending on the group, patients received three doses of the vaccine (0.5 mg or 1.0 mg) administered intramuscularly at either three- or seven-day intervals. The researchers reported that the vaccine was well tolerated in all groups with no severe adverse reactions observed ("Comparison of two immunization schedules for a Pseudomonas aeruginosa outer membrane proteins vaccine in burn patients," Vaccine, 2000;19(9-10):1274-1283).
Of the 95 patients, 88 were available after three immunizations for evaluation of serum antibody titers. The researchers observed that there was a significantly higher elevation of OMP-specific antibody titers in the immunization groups as compared to the placebo group. The strongest antibody response was realized in patients immunized ...
