2001 FEB 1 - (NewsRx.com) -- Though Sjogren's syndrome patients can have hearing loss, the mechanism for such loss remains unclear.
Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a disease that affects mainly women. Some SS patients experience hearing loss but the pathogenesis of this loss remains elusive. A.A. Drosos, of the University Ioannina in Greece, and associates investigated hearing loss in primary SS patients, but their results were inconclusive.
"Approximately one-fourth of our SS patients presented with SNHL [sensorineural hearing loss] of cochlear origin affecting mainly the high frequencies. This prevalence was lower than that reported by other investigators. SNHL was associated only with disease duration. Further investigation is needed to attain a better understanding of the mechanism of inner ear involvement in SS patients," the researchers reported.
Drosos et al. evaluated 40 women with a mean SS duration of about eight years. The women underwent an overall examination including an ear-nose-throat physical exam and audiological evaluation. Disease manifestations and drug therapies were recorded as was presence of any ...
