2001 FEB 1 - (NewsRx.com) -- Mind-body therapies (MBT) is better than nothing, but are they better than physiotherapy, psychotherapy, or education for the treatment of fibromyalgia?
Researchers just don't know. V.A. Hadhazy, of Annapolis, Maryland, and associates don't know either because the results of their study were, for the most part, unclear.
"MBT is more effective for some clinical outcomes compared to waiting list/treatment as usual or placebo. Compared to active treatments, results are largely inconclusive, except for moderate/high intensity exercise, where results favor the latter," the researchers reported.
Hadhazy et al. evaluated 13 trials including 802 fibromyalgia patients ("Mind-body therapies for the treatment of fibromyalgia. A systematic review," Journal of Rheumatology, December 2000;27(12):2911-2918).
