Editorial / Sea tragedy must not be repeated Yomiuri One can only ask how such a senseless tragedy as the sinking of the Ehime Maru could have happened. The fishing training boat operated by the Ehime prefectural Uwajima Fisheries High School and the U.S. nuclear-powered submarine, USS Greeneville, collided in the waters of the Hawaiian island of Oahu on Friday. The Ehime Maru was on anocean training voyage off Hawaii. After the collision, the Ehime Maru sank in just 10 minutes. Twenty-six people on board were rescued, but nine people, including four young trainees, are still missing.
