Reclamation blamed for poor seaweed crop Yomiuri A Saga University professor believes the loss of tidelands from land-reclamation projects is behind this season's record-low seaweed harvest and the discoloration of seaweed grown in the prefecture. The professor, Masahiro Seguchi, said the disappearance of biologically rich tidelands in the prefecture's Isahaya Bay may also damage the marine ecosystem of the Ariake Sea, on which the bay lies, as the tidelands cleanse the seawater of impurities. Marine creatures that live in the shallow tideland water, such as lugworms and crabs, consume waste that is drained into the ocean from urban sewerage systems, while seawater bacteria …
