The chronic obstructive lung diseases - emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma - are some of the most common respiratory diseases. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation, loss of the elastic recoil of lung tissue and airway obstruction, which increasingly causes the individual to struggle for air.

The public's perception of individuals with COPD is that they are on a hopeless, downward trajectory toward poor health and diminished well-being.' Health professionals often share in the public's patronizing attitude toward the COPD client.
