Ever since his marriage began to publicly fall apart in the early 1990s, Prince Charles has steered clear of what his courtiers used to call "Diana territory"--the United States. He briefly visited Los Angeles in 1994 and New York in 1997. But since the death of Diana later that year, Charles's circle has considered a U.S. visit inadvisable. Now, NEWSWEEK has learned, the prince is contemplating a trip to America after all.
Charles has reason for caution. As his advisers see it, many Americans regard him as the cad who, with the help of his paramour, Camilla Parker Bowles, wrecked a fairy-tale marriage. The Yanks may be more unforgiving than his subjects in Britain, where he has earned approval as a struggling single dad who devotes himself to charitable works.
