Peter Mandelson's first rough landing came just two years ago: he was forced to resign as Britain's Trade secretary after failing to disclose a [pound]373,000 home loan given to him by another minister. The disgrace was fleeting. Within months his close friend Tony Blair named Mandelson Northern Ireland secretary, effectively rehabilitating the Labour government's former spinmaster and media bully. Last week the press got its sweet revenge--reporting that Mandelson had once helped an Indian tycoon get a British passport. The tycoon, SrichandHinduja, later donated [pound]1 million to London's ill-fated Millennium Dome, then Mandelson's pet project. That was no crime--but a serious misjudgment on Mandelson's part in the sleaze-sensitive world of Westminster. He was summoned to Downing Street to deliver a second resignation. Crowed the conservative Sun tabloid: "Goodbye and Good Riddance. This time don't come back."
Mandelson won't be the only loser. For Blair, he was much more than just an efficient minister handling a tricky brief. Mandelson was Labour's master tactician. His political skills proved crucial in helping the party regain power in 1997. Along with Blair, he invented the socialism-light "New Labour" that ended 17 years of Conservative rule. Now Blair must face the next election, likely to be held in early summer, with his key aide in political exile.
