Packaging specialist DuBOIS has reached an out-of-court settlement with Japanese company Shoei, bringing to an end an ongoing dispute in which the latter company was accused of infringing its rival's intellectual property rights.

DuBOIS, part of Westvaco Corporation, contended that the locking mechanism of the Shoei DVD packaging concept breached the patent of its own DVD-Safe package, which is mainly marketed under the Amaray brand.

When DuBOIS became aware of the alleged infringement in January 1997, it initially offered Shoei the opportunity to become an international licensee of the DVD-Safe case -- an invitation the Japanese firm declined.
