2001 JAN 25 -- (NewsRx.com) -- People who suffer from disorders associated with a dysfunctional thyroid often have elevated levels of angiogenesis-related growth factors in their blood, researchers in Poland report.
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) levels were measured in patients with Grave's disease, toxic nodular goiter, or thyroid cancer.
"Twelve newly diagnosed, untreated hyperthyroid patients with Grave's disease, 11 females with toxic nodular goiter, 22 subjects with thyroid cancer, and 10 healthy females were included in the study," said J. Komorowski and colleagues at the Medical University of Lodz.
They worked with associates at the Polish Mother Memorial Hospital in compiling data for their report, "Basic fibroblast growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor in peripheral blood of patients with thyroid cancer, Grave's disease, and toxic nodular goiter." The study was presented in Sydney, Australia, at the 1 International Congress of Endocrinology.
