2001 JAN 25 -- (NewsRx.com) -- Immusol, Inc, San Diego, California, announced that the company's proprietary Inverse Genomics technology led to the discovery of a potential drug target gene for breast and ovarian cancer.

Immusol's work is described in the January 2, 2001 issue of The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

This gene, called ID4, may be a key gene in breast and ovarian cancer that prevents the normal production of a beneficial anti-cancer protein, called BRCA1. Ninety percent of all breast and ovarian cancers have a normal BRCA1 gene but tend to express it at lower levels than normal cells. Immusol's goal was to identify the genes that interfere with proper BRCA1 expression as therapeutic drug targets.

Ideal drugs are those that inhibits specifically the activity or production of their target proteins. "Because ID4 inhibits BRCA1 ...
