2001 JAN 25 - (NewsRx.com) -- Intraepithelial neoplasias resulting from human papillomavirus infection occur commonly in women also infected with HIV.
Researchers in Brazil suggest that since genital inferior tract neoplasias have a high prevalence in such patients, these women should be evaluated by genitoscopy, which comprises colposcopy, vaginoscopy, vulvoscopy, and anuscopy.
Of 77 women coinfected with human papillomavirus (HPV) and HIV, Nadir Qyakawa and colleagues at the Hospital Perola Byington in Sao Paulo, Brazil, reported the following types of neoplasias in 48:
* No CIN1; 16 CIN2; 12 CIN3; and four cervical invasive carcinoma
* Two patients were diagnosed with CIN1/VIN1; one with CIN2/VAIN 1; two with CIN3/VAIN1; and one with CTN3/VAIN3/VIN2
* No VIN 1; four CIN2/VIN1/VAIN1; 12 VIN3/CIN2; three Bowen's
