2001 JAN 25 - (NewsRx.com) -- AltaRex Corp. (AXO, ALRXF), Waltham, Massachusetts, reported the final results of one of its OvaRex Phase II trials conducted by Thomas Ehlen, MD, FRCSC, at the Vancouver Cancer Center in British Columbia, Canada.
The company also announced preliminary results of a second OvaRex Phase II trial conducted by Alan Gordon, MD, U.S. Oncology in Houston, Texas. Both trials address patients with very advanced recurrent ovarian cancer where the future prognosis is extraordinarily poor.
In the Vancouver study, six of 13 OvaRex-treated patients survived 50 weeks or longer without any significant OvaRex-associated toxicity, even though they had very advanced disease and had exhausted all treatment alternatives. One of the six patients survived over two years and two of the six patients are still alive almost two years later.
By comparison, approved "salvage" chemotherapies (Doxil, Hycamptin) for this population are generally expected to provide a survival benefit of approximately one year, but in contrast to OvaRex monoclonal antibody (MAb), are associated with significant toxicities.
In the Dallas study, patients receive OvaRex MAb followed by "salvage" chemotherapy and then a final dose of OvaRex MAb. This population is at a somewhat earlier stage of disease than the Vancouver trial, thereby allowing for this study design. ...
