2001 JAN 31 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has added pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) to its recommended immunization schedule for children.

The vaccine protects against infection by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, which causes thousands of pneumonia, sinusitis, and ear infections in children each year. Unlike its predecessor, the new vaccine is approved for children under two years old. Kids in this age group tend to suffer more serious S. pneumoniae infections.
