2001 JAN 31 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The ability of HIV vaccines to marshal the body's defenses against the infection can be enhanced by concomitant treatment with Flt3 ligand, study results suggest.
"Liposomes and Flt3 ligand (Flt3L), a ligand for the fms-like tyrosine kinase receptor Flt3/FLK2, can augment the immune response to an HIV peptide vaccine," explained J.E. Talmadge and colleagues at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Talmadge et al. compared the efficacy of the HGP-30 vaccine, a peptide based on a highly conserved sequence of the HIV-1 protein p17 gag, when administered with or without daily Flt3 ligand injections ("Flt3 ligand enhances the immunogenicity of a gag-based HIV-1 vaccine," International Journal of Immunopharmacology, 2000;22(11):865-876).
Mice treated with both HGP-30 and Flt3 displayed a significantly more robust lymphocyte response compared with mice dosed with either treatment alone, or with HGP-30 combined with liposomes, according to the report. Delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses occurred more often in the mice when HGP-30 was administered by an intravenous rather than an intramuscular route, reported Talmadge et al.
