WRX fans won't wait

Thousands of would-be owners of the 2002 Subaru WRX viewed the car on its official website, www.imprezawrx.com, hours before it was unveiled in Detroit. Subaru says a WRX fan apparently hacked into the site before it was active and then posted the site information on a Subaru community information board on the Internet.

Before Subaru sealed the breach, 3000 visitors had toured the site, including 250 who requested WRX brochures, 80 who registered their scores on an interactive Rally Racing game and 60 who actually ordered the car.

Buick's future: LaCrosse and GNX

General Motors' Buick division, fresh from showing its well-received Bengal concept (AW, Jan. 22) at the Detroit show, will likely see last year's concept LaCrosse making its way into production in some form, according to GM manufacturing head Gary Cowger. LaCrosse is a V8-powered luxury sedan that converts to a pickup truck.

In addition, sources say Buick also is considering building a 275-hp GNX to commemorate its 100th anniversary in 2003. The car's supercharged V6 will meet or beat the horsepower of the last production GNX built in 1987.
