Carl G. Fisher's name should be well known to AutoWeek readers, but this very well may be the first time you've read it. No, he wasn't one of the Body by Fisher brothers, though they may have been distant relatives. Carl G. Fisher was the father of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its famed 500-mile race, as well as the force behind the Lincoln and Dixie highways, and the developer of Miami Beach and the Montauk resort community at the tip of Long Island.
But despite such accomplishments, he somehow escaped mention in Who's Who. It was just that sort of oversight that motivated Jerry M. Fisher to write this biography of his not-quite-famous cousin. He recently completed a screenplay based on the book.
But even though they were kin, don't anticipate that Jerry Fisher's family relationship caused him to overlook Carl Fisher's faults.
