Texaco will finish its sponsorship contract with CART's Newman-Haas team thanks to an out-of-court settlement between the parties. Texaco sued Newman-Haas last fall after the team named driver Cristiano da Matta as Michael Andretti's replacement, claiming its sponsorship deal was contingent on Andretti being in the seat. Both sides were quiet about specific settlement terms, but Texaco will sponsor da Matta's car through the 2002 season, when its contract expires.

Brabham bags Daytona

Hopes that two of the world's best sports car drivers would pair up in next month's Daytona 24 Hours have disappeared. David Brabham had been in line to share a Risi Competizione Ferrari 333SP with newly crowned American Le Mans Series champion Allan McNish, but testing commitments in a Panoz have precluded Brabham's participation in the enduro. ``I'm disappointed because I always enjoy racing at Daytona, but Panoz remains my No. 1 priority,'' Brabham said.
