On the test track and THE road, we have to agree with the many responses we received from passionate owners-the Z06 launches Corvette to a new level.
Chevy engineers made performance improvements throughout the Z06, the fastest, best-handling production Corvette ever. It's powered exclusively by the LS6 V8, a pumped-up version of the regular Vette's LS1. The LS6's 385 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque exceed the LS1 by 40 hp and 35 lb-ft.
The suspension is tighter, the clutch bigger, the six-speed sportier, the suspension tightened, the curb weight lighter (by 38 pounds) and the tires widened. The Z06 also sports unique seats and interior/exterior appearance touches.
Braking is fantastic. Aided by Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires-designed exclusively for the car-the Z06 set a new AutoWeek AutoFile record by stopping from 60 mph in just 105 feet. That beat the previous record-holder, the Porsche 911 Turbo, by five feet and the Boxster S by six.
On the skidpad (in third gear, with the traction control off) we encountered some understeer. Yet the Z06 posted an excellent 0.95 g average, vs. the Porsche 911 Turbo's 0.93 g and the Boxster S's 0.92. We again believe the tires deserve more than the usual amount of credit-they supplant the heavier, less-grippy run-flats on standard Vettes.
