A year ago Richard Mugisha's aid organization, People With Disabilities, was doing such a good job counseling and training handicapped people in Uganda that demand for its services was threatening to overwhelm his small staff. So the Ugandan director registered with Netaid.org, one of a growing number of Web sites that link volunteers and donors from wealthy countries with organizations doing work in the developing world. Mugisha soon found himself flooded with applications. A few months later he had enlisted about 100 volunteers, including a 26-year-old stay-at-home mom in Texas who has become his volunteer coordinator. Another helper, a musician from Brazil, has composed a theme song to be played on PWD's future Web site. Mugisha now has enough help to start a newsletter, fire off grant proposals and perhaps even create a sister organization in the States to collect donations.
