American drivers are finally getting their own model of the rally-inspired Subaru that the rest of the world has been celebrating for years: the Impreza WRX, first unveiled to the American public at Detroit and coming to market in March. Unlike many of the Most Fun candidates, this is one staffers have already driven, so we know it's a blast. The first model in an all-new range of Imprezas for 2002 (watch for the 2.5RS, TS Sport Wagon and Outback Sport to join it), the WRX is offered in sedan and sport wagon forms, though only the sedan has the fender flares to cover a widened front track. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four cranks out 227 hp in U.S. trim, 12 hp more than the European edition makes. On the flip side, Euro cars get better brakes with four-piston calipers for the front and duals for the rear, while our model makes do with twin pots in front and singles in the rear. ...
