Porsche chairman Wendelin Wiedeking says the factory may be able to offer earlier delivery on a Turbo than customers were initially told. Having planned to make 2500 Turbos this year, Porsche has increased production and will actually build 4000. That should shorten the wait for those already on the list, but new orders will still go to the end of a yearlong line.

Although it comes to market in May in Europe, it will be fall before Porsche starts delivering the GT2 in America at a base sticker of $179,900-and, though production is not limited in the sense that 959 production was, the line for the GT2 could well be longer than that for the Turbo.

As for the Carrera GT concept shown at Paris and again in Detroit (where it was poised on an elevated platform situated as near as possible to the floor-level Ferrari stand across the aisle), the chairman says, ``We are still studying the size of the market and the general acceptance of a Porsche in this price range. In spring, we will be making the final decision.''
