President-Elect George W. Bush

George W. Bush's victory after a prolonged presidential battle left a negative impression on many readers. Several expressed dismay over what they viewed as a dubious process, but others focused on the shortcomings of the president-elect himself. "Bush lacks the qualities required for office," a reader opined; another wondered if Bush would take a "cowboyish approach" to national-security issues. But a more optimistic reader encouraged everyone to "give a chance to this new man. He will reinforce the nation."

America's New Leader

Finally America has a new president, whose legitimacy is recognized even by his opponent. Bush will reinforce the nation and unite Republicans and Democrats. Even Al Gore, who never admitted his defeat, called for reconciliation. George W. Bush will lead America, which has suffered for eight years under the Clinton-Gore team. Let's hope honor and dignity return to the White House. Let's give a chance to this new man who has the right qualities to be president.

Arnaud Coutant -- Paris, France

During the post-election crisis, Bush behaved like a man who wanted power by any means. He lacks the qualities required for office-- generosity, impartiality and wisdom. His so-called victory is a serious defeat of what America really represents to the world: boldness, innovative ideas and spirit.

Pierre Tran -- St-Antonin-Noble-Val, France
