2001 JAN 17 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The best way to save costs while targeting people who may have a need for hepatitis A virus (HAV) vaccinations prior to travel is to screen them based on age and their country of origin, according to a new study.
The study, conducted at a Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in California, showed that costs of screening and vaccinating travelers could be maintained by following a few simple screening recommendations. Those recommendations were published in the Western Journal of Medicine ("Screening travelers for hepatitis A antibodies - An observational cost-comparison study of vaccine use," West J Med, 2000;173(5):325-329).
More than 500 adults were tested for antibodies to hepatitis A (anti-HAV) at the California medical center between 1995 and 1996. "The presence of anti-HAV precluded the need for vaccination in 148 subjects (28.1%)," reported K.K. Lee and colleagues.
