Car-crazed but usually gridlocked (sub)urbanites like us love a good road trip. Our third quarter with the Focus began with a long weekend jaunt-replete with gear-that fueled comparisons with our long-term PT Cruiser. With the seats flipped down in the Ford, it's got cargo room galore; throw in the ``tossability'' factor and the sticker price, and the Focus may beat the Cruiser at its own game.
The New Edge hatch scores with the more youthful members of our staff, while those who dislike it also tend to regard the retro Chrysler with admiration usually reserved for, say, Bill Knapps. Anecdotal evidence in the Midwest bears this dichotomy out. But before initiating an AARP letter-writing campaign, consider this dictum, issued by our seniormost staffer: ``This car responds to energetic flogging. If you're lazy and expect the car to do the work for you, you'll get what you deserve. Making the driver part of the experience is the name of the game. ...
