2001 JAN 10 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Data from the HIV Prevention Trials Unit of the University of Washington indicate that chances to treat HIV patients early or to prevent HIV infection in at-risk individuals frequently are missed.
In a study of 103 HIV seroconverters, conducted from 1995-1998, 50 subjects had sought medical attention and of these, only eight were determined to have acute HIV disease, reported C.L. Celum and colleagues in the January 2001 issue of the Journal of Infectious Disease. Assessment of their subjects' risk behaviors found that most (83%) were men who had sex with men. "Most reported multiple risk episodes and symptoms (84%, >= one symptom) during seroconversion," the researchers said ("Early human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the HIV Network for Prevention Trials vaccine preparedness cohort: Risk behaviors, symptoms, and early plasma and genital tract virus load," J Infect Dis, January 2001;183(1):23-35).
